If you’re still holding on to the New Year’s Resolution “thing” after years of trying and failing, maybe it’s time to be more informed. The truth is, most of us make hasty decisions based on emotion, without looking at the hard facts. As you begin your daily mind battle of whether or not to go to the gym today, take a minute to look at the truths that are a little harder to swallow than those remaining Christmas chocolates on the counter.
Truth #1: Exercising for weight loss is different than exercising to maintain your current weight.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting at least thirty minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. This is great for improving heart health and staying active, but to lose weight, you’ll most likely need to double that. If you want to boost weight loss and calorie burn, you’ll have to find 50 minutes free to get your serious walk on.
Truth #2: Weight Loss is a numbers game…to a point.
Calories in versus calories out is a simple equation when considering weight loss. You must burn more than you take in in order to lose those pounds. However, it isn’t always that simple. Drinking six sodas a day comes out to about 1200 calories (just go with us here, this is simply for an example…). You can reach 1200 calories by also eating balanced meals and snacks throughout the day. One diet has all empty calories, and the other can be packed with nutrients, protein, healthy carbs and fats…so there is a difference in the type of calories you take in. The numbers matter, but only to a point. Just try keeping your intake of empty calories to a minimum. Make sure you’re getting some seriously nutrient-dense calories.
Truth #3: Your body is working against you.
Our genetics play a huge role in how we gain and lose weight. Our preference for energy-dense food goes back to harder times when it was necessary to pack away calories in anticipation of harder times. That’s why it’s easier to put on the pounds than to lose them. Now that we live in a culture of abundance, wouldn’t be nice to remind our bodies of that?
These are just three things to think about as you prepare to shed the weight. Here’s the final truth:
