As the most prominent facial feature, the size and shape of the nose can significantly impact the symmetrical balance and aesthetic appeal of the entire face. Nasal reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty) is a surgical procedure designed to modify and enhance the shape, proportions and symmetry of the nose, thereby improving the overall aesthetics of the face. In addition to providing aesthetic benefits, rhinoplasty is also frequently performed to correct damage to the nose resulting from accident or injury, and to treat breathing problems caused by structural abnormalities in the nasal passageway.
Specific nasal-related issues that rhinoplasty can address and treat include:
- Nasal size in relation to other features of the face
- Nasal asymmetry or deviation
- Nasal width (too wide or too narrow) at the bridge or tip of the nose
- Upturned, wide, or large nostrils
- Nasal profile (bumps or curves on the bridge of the nose)
In order to ensure balanced and proportional surgical results, changes to the nose must take into account the impact of those modifications on the entire face. For this reason, it is very important that your rhinoplasty be performed by a skillful, Board Certified plastic surgeon with a keen eye for facial aesthetics.
As the lead plastic surgeon at Byrd Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center, located in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Paul McCluskey has an in-depth knowledge of the intricate facial structures, and takes pride in helping his patients improve the proportions, balance, and overall aesthetic appeal of their faces.
About the Procedure
Rhinoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or IV sedation, although an overnight stay may be necessary for patients with health complications. During your nasal reshaping surgery, Dr. McCluskey will create an incision across the columella (the cartilage between the nostrils) or within the nostrils in order to lift the nasal tissue and readjust the bone and cartilage underneath. If your procedure involves extensive changes to the nasal cartilage, additional cartilage may be harvested from your septum or ear. After reshaping the underlying structure of the nose, Dr. McCluskey will re-drape the nasal tissue and skin before closing the incisions and making any final adjustments to alter the shape and size of the nostrils.
Aftercare and Recovery
Following your procedure, internal tubes and external splints will remain in place for approximately seven days, in order to ensure that the nasal structures heal in the proper position. You may experience some post-operative bruising and swelling around the eyelids, as well as light bleeding and drainage of old mucus and blood. For the first few weeks after your surgery, you will need to avoid movements that could stress the nose (i.e., blowing your nose, resting glasses on the bridge of your nose, pulling tight clothes over your head) and all strenuous physical activities. Almost all post-operative discoloration and swelling and discoloration should subside within a few weeks; however, it could take up to a year for the contours of the nose to take on their permanent shape.
