There are several types of Fraxel lasers — each designed to target specific skin problems. Dr. Marcia Byrd, M.D. at Byrd Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Center in Atlanta, GA works with countless patients to help them achieve the best skin possible. Because all patients are unique, some require more aggressive treatment than others for optimal results. A consultation with Dr. Byrd can help to determine which Fraxel procedure best suits your needs. Dr. Byrd performs three types of Fraxel procedures as follows:

Fraxel Re:Store (non-ablative): is a non-invasive procedure that is performed with a dual laser or non-ablative laser to stimulate collagen growth in the skin resulting in a healthy glow and smoother texture. The laser energy produces a wound healing response without injuring the skin surface, allowing for a faster recovery time, typically 1-3 days. A series of non-ablative laser treatments can improve the appearance of fine lines, mottled pigmentation, melasma, acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks and enlarged pores.

Fraxel Laser Re:Pair (ablative): is also a safe, non-invasive, ablative skin resurfacing procedure that allows you to rediscover the fresh, healthy skin of your youth by vaporizing the top skin layers in a precise, controlled manner to promote new collagen formation and skin rejuvenation. Fraxel Laser Re:Pair is very useful for improving scarring, moderate wrinkles, severe sun damage, moderate skin laxity, mottled pigmentation and cosmetic tattoos. Treatment is highly effective, however recovery time is longer and can range from a few days to a few weeks. Mini-Fraxel, Clear + Bright: procedure can significantly improve the appearance of skin by erasing sun damage, dark spots, fine lines/wrinkles, and areas of hyperpigmentation. The Mini-Fraxel uses a low level of energy so there is less risk for burning and scarring. The treatment can be used on almost any area of skin, including the face, neck, arms, and hands. Even delicate areas, such as around the eyes, can be safely and effectively treated with the Mini-Fraxel Laser. Learn more+

How Many Treatments are Needed?

The number of treatments needed depends on your goals and constraints. We work with patients to weigh the aggressiveness of treatment against the downtime associated. Typically, patients require between 4 and 6 treatments separated by about 2 to 3 weeks.

About the Procedure

Once the skin is cleansed, a topical numbing agent is applied approximately 60 to 90 minutes prior to treatment. The procedure takes approximately 30-40 minutes for a full face. Most patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the treatment, and there may be some discomfort or pain. However, unlike the experience in traditional CO2 treatments, patients will feel quite comfortable immediately after a Fraxel Re:Store treatment.

Aftercare and Recovery

Depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, you may experience redness or swelling after the procedure that diminishes as quickly as the next day or over the next several days. More aggressive treatments, such as ablative procedures with Fraxel Re:Pair, require more downtime. Depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, clinical downtime may last up to 2 days and social downtime may last 5-7 days. Temporary side effects may include minor itching, dry skin, peeling or flaking, and a bronzed skin appearance.

There are both immediate and progressive results. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter and show more even tone. The next 3 to 6 months will bring additional improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to heal. Results can last for several years depending on your age and skin condition.
