TDS Treatment | Dr. Marcia Byrd | Atlanta, GATestosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TDS) is the name of the condition associated with the symptoms of low-testosterone levels. Approximately 20% of men over the age of 50 suffer from this condition; however, there is an effective treatment option available, in the form of bio-identical testosterone replacement therapy. Bio-identical testosterone is a natural form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and has proven to be extremely effective for reducing the symptoms of TDS without many of the side effects associated with traditional HRT, which utilizes synthetic, rather than natural, hormones. Dr. Marcia Byrd, M.D. understands that every patient has a unique biological and chemical makeup, and therefore, cannot be treated with a ‘one size fits all’ treatment, as traditional HRT often advocates. To strategize treatment, Dr. Byrd will conduct an in-depth assessment and examination of your current symptoms and medical history, and will then order the appropriate laboratory tests necessary to evaluate your current baseline hormone levels. After analyzing the results, Dr. Byrd will create a customized hormone supplementation plan tailored to restore your body to a state of physical health and vitality.

At Byrd Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Center, located in Roswell, Georgia, Dr. Marcia Byrd, M.D., is a highly experienced physician, who has studied the medical benefits of bio-identical testosterone replacement therapy, and utilizes these treatments to reverse the effects of TDS, and to revitalize, reinvigorate, and restore her male patients to good mental and physical health. Dr. Byrd only incorporates bio-identical hormones in her treatment plans, because they have the same chemical structure as hormones produced by the human body, meaning that your body recognizes the hormones as its own, and the detrimental side effects of synthetic hormone replacement therapy can be avoided.

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is the hormone that is responsible for a number of vital male physiological functions, including: the normal growth and development of male sexual characteristics, growth of lean muscle mass, maintenance of adequate levels of red blood cells, the breakdown of fat stores, bone strength and growth, and sexual function. Testosterone has an important impact on men’s mental and emotional health as well, and can enhance confidence, energy, mood, and male libido.

Testosterone levels peak during adolescence, and begin to decline with age—generally decreasing approximately 1% each year after age 30. In addition to the natural aging process, low testosterone levels can be caused by a number of environmental and genetically-based factors, including:

  • Injury to the testicles
  • Hypogonadism: low testosterone levels due to dysfunctional pituitary gland (controls hormone release from testicles)
  • Chronic stress
  • Radiation or chemotherapy for cancer treatment
  • Genetic conditions (ie. Klinefelter’s Syndrome)
  • Dysfunction of the pituitary gland (a gland in the brain responsible for the production and secretion of key hormones)
  • Obesity
  • Medications (ie. Corticosteroids)
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Alcoholism
  • Chronic illness (ie. Kidney failure, liver cirrhosis)

As testosterone levels decrease, men may experience a number of problematic emotional and physical health issues, such as:

  • reduced sex drive
  • erectile dysfunction
  • feelings of depression
  • insomnia
  • difficulty concentrating and thinking clearly
  • decrease in lean muscle mass
  • increased risk for osteoporosis
  • increased fat deposits around the stomach and chest area
  • reduced iron levels
  • diminished energy, ambition, and motivation levels
